Taking Care of Your Antique Singer Sewing Machine

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Antique Singer sewing machines are priceless. The built of such a machine is so sturdy that it can stay with you for many generations. Because of the fast development of today's technology, there are times that you might be needing your old machine due to there are many other machines today that are so convenient to use and will make your job faster and easier. But no matter how old it is, your antique machine can still be trusted whenever you need it. So here are some tips on how to take care your antique machine.

If you are not going to use it, store your antique Singer sewing machine in a place away from moisture. It is not hard to notice but these machines are mostly made up of metal. When you are going to expose it to moisture, then rust will feast on it. Also, protect it with a dust cover to ensure additional prevention of moisture from sticking on to it.

When you are going to remove dust and lint from it, a vacuum cleaner attached with a small nozzle, brush with delicate bristles, or a can of compressed air are the most effective tools to use. If you are going to clean some remnants of thread or cloth away from the bobbin case, then the most effective tool to utilize is a compressed air in a can.

To add some extra protection to your sewing machine, you must avoid using accessories that are generic. Instead, use accessories that are exclusively made for your machine. A generic accessory can be useful in some other brands but it is not going to help much with the upgraded versions, even if the accessory has the same brand with the machine.

If your antique machine needs some repairing, don't just do it by yourself. You might just destroy it further or injure yourself if you do. You must visit an authorized dealer for further consulting and repair. It may be a bit pricey but at least you wont get your machine and yourself into trouble.

These are just some of the tips in taking care of your antique Singer sewing machine. Treat it as if it is your family. With care, it will going to be with you for a long time.

Choosing the right sewing machine for you leaves your time consumed. One of the favorite sewing appliances not only in the textile industry but also to every household is the Singer Sewing Machines. How to Clean Your Singer Featherweight 221 Sewing Machine

Image : http://www.flickr.com

You should clean your Singer Featherweight 221 at least once a year, and sometimes even after an extended period (several weeks) of continuous sewing.

Like any machine that needs to be cleaned and oiled, it's a good idea to work over a layer of newspapers in order to minimize any additional mess. Other items you'll need are a screwdriver, WD-40 lubricant, baby oil, sewing machine oil, lint free cotton fabric, Q-tips or toothpicks, an old small head toothbrush, and possibly 0000 fine steel wool and kerosene. Do not use alcohol (or Lestoil) to clean your Featherweight as it will dissolve the finish and the machines decals.

Start by scraping off all visible grease with a lint free cotton fabric. If you have not cleaned your Featherweight in some time, or you just purchased one and this is its first cleaning in a while, you may need to dissolve some grease that has hardened. To do this pour a little kerosene (or WD-40) onto the solidified grease and allow it to soften. Very stubborn, hardened grease may need to be soaked overnight in which case you should tip your Featherweight so that the solid material sits on a cloth soaked with kerosene (naturally this should be done in a well ventilated area, and away from open flames). Once all the old grease is removed, reapply approved sewing machine oil only. Refer to your owner's manual for the appropriate oiling locations.

If you notice bits of grease or grime accumulating around the Singer Featherweight decal, or lettering, these can be easily removed with a Q-tip or toothpick covered with a small section of your lint free cotton. Stubborn bits can be removed by first soaking the end of the Q-tip with WD-40 or kerosene.

Remove the needle plate (throat plate) and remove any thread that may be wound around the shaft. Also clean out any accumulated lint inside the cover and under the thread spindle with a toothbrush.

If you are mechanically inclined, it's not a bad idea to give your Featherweight 221 a very thorough internal cleaning as well. This means having to remove pretty much every mechanical component that can be unscrewed including the face plate, presser foot, bobbin cover and flywheel, but not the motor. It's always a good idea to keep the components together (and labeled if necessary) so you know how to put it all back together again. All components should be thoroughly sprayed/soaked with WD-40 and wiped clean. The WD-40 will actually clean, lubricate, and help to protect the metal components.

Remember, although you can wipe down the motor housing, do not lubricate the motor. Electric motors require very little lubricant, and it is very easy to damage the motor by over lubricating it.

After you wipe down the motor, take a moment to check the belt tension. There should only be ½ to ¾ of an inch of play in the belt. Also, if the belt is worn, replace it. This is done by loosening the screw directly under the belt at the base of the machine, almost straight back from the light switch. Loosen the screw just enough so that the motor slides (do not remove the screw) and the belt is able to be removed. Place the new belt on, slide the motor back into position and retighten the screw. Make sure you have the proper belt tension. If the belt is too tight you will strain the motor. If the belt is too loose, you will lose power. To get the best performance out of your machine, take your time and make sure you have the proper belt tension.

If you notice any light surface rust (not deeply pitted) on the metal parts of your machine, this can also be fairly easily removed. Rub the rusted section gently with 0000 fine steel wool. Stubborn spots can be helped off by first spraying the steel wool with WD-40 or dabbing with kerosene. Do not use the steel wool to remove any dirt, grease or debris from the machine surface since it will leave scratch marks on the lacquer finish.

Once you've finished cleaning your Singer Featherweight 221, make sure all of the screws have been tightened. Any loose screws can cause grinding or rattling noises and in extreme cases can possibly damage you machine, if it causes a jam.

Finally, put a little dab of baby oil onto a soft lint free cotton fabric and rub it all over the outside of the machine body. Wipe off any excess. Not only will this give the unit a nice shine, but the oil will help to preserve the varnish finish.

Regular cleaning of your Singer Featherweight 221 sewing machine will keep it running smoothly for years.

Singer 1748 Sewing Machine Review

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Singer 1748 sewing machine has attractive red detail so it's a very nice looking machine but its real charm comes from the unique combination of built-in stretch stitches. This sewing machine also has adjustable presser foot pressure which is helpful when working with different fabric thicknesses and can be hard to find on sewing machines under $200.

Singer 1748 Stitch Patterns
There are 32 built in stitches that cover different types of fabric and different types of sewing but the bulk are a unique set of decorative stretch and over-edge stitches that make for extra strong seams. These stitches can be used for applique, quilting, stippling, and certainly for garment construction.

A stitch reference guide is printed on the front of the machine so you can quickly find the pattern you want and a dial on the side is used to scroll through those available patterns. The selected stitch pattern appears in a small window on the front of the machine. Two dials on the front control stitch width and stitch length - both of which are adjustable to 5mm.

This set of stitches includes a four-step, bartack style buttonhole. Not as quick as a one-step, but still very functional and easy enough for beginners to use.

Singer 1748 Presser Feet
This sewing machine comes with four snap-on style, low shank presser feet: All Purpose foot, Zipper foot, Buttonhole foot, and the Button Sewing foot which can be used to attach two and four-hole buttons.

The presser foot lever has 3 height settings including the normal down position used during sewing, the up position used to insert or remove fabric, and an extra high up for inserting and removing thicker fabrics.

Singer 1748 Features
This electric sewing machine offers a basic set of sewing features. There is an automatic needle threader, adjustable top thread tension, a handy reverse lever for reverse sewing, and a manual thread cutter at the back of the machine. It's not high on automation but it is a nice, sturdy basic sewing machine that's easy to operate.

You can remove the flat bed for free-arm sewing and a work lamp provides adequate lighting over the needle plate.

The bobbin winder is not automatic and you do have to draw up the bottom threads yourself to start sewing. The bobbin is also front-loading, not top-loading, which some people find more difficult to work with while others prefer this traditional bobbin set up.

Singer 1748 Accessories
Included are a number of sewing accessories that store in the flat bed attachment: L-shaped screwdriver, seam ripper and brush, oil bottle, extra needles, extra bobbins, a seam guide, darning plate, spool holder, and a second spool pin.

The Singer 1748 sewing machine is a great for beginners, particularly if the focus will be on stretchy fabrics and clothes-making projects.

Choosing The Right Sewing Machine For You

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When you first start sewing, it can seem like there are too many things you need to know. Whether you have a project in mind already or if you just want to learn to sew, it is hard to make a decision about what sort of sewing machine to buy. So, here are some things to help you make that decision.

Firstly, there are lots of things to consider when shopping for a sewing machine, but just a few of them are really important. The first thing you'll discover is that machines come in two categories: mechanical and computerized. Despite the name, mechanical models are electric and many have good features like a wide variety of stitches. However, they generally require you to control the variables available by hand and tend to cost less. Computerized machines allow you to choose your selections using a simple touch screen and control most functions through computer chips. Many computerized machines also have LED screens that display your settings and usually offer more features and stitch flexibility.

Mechanical Sewing Machines
When looking at mechanical models, the most important features you should look for are:

  • the ability to alter your stitches

  • sew in reverse

  • ability to move the needle to the left and right.

Additionally, a machine that feeds the fabric through the machine smoothly without needing extra help from you and a reasonable selection of basic utility stitches are a must. This combination of features in a mechanical machine will give you a good machine to work with.

Computerized Sewing Machines
While mechanical models are a good choice for beginners and can easily deal with simple projects, the technology in sewing machines over the past decade has led to more sophisticated computerized machines. They offer more options and even the beginner will appreciate the automation they offer not to mention that they start at a very reasonable prices. Most computerized models have a needle up/down mode that allows you to stop at any point to adjust your fabric without skipping a single stitch. They also have more extensive stitch packages, so you can grow with your machine. As a beginner you may only use a few simple stitches, but as you start more complex projects, you'll have the option of using more decorative stitch patterns and some of the other automatic feature such as automatic buttonholing.

It's important to choose a machine that will be able to accommodate your growing imagination. It depends on what you intend to do with your machine. Perhaps making clothes for the family, quilting or just functional repairs. As you are introduced to even more advanced machines, you may want to consider how using embellishments, like embroidery designs for instance, could add more to your projects. If this is likely, keep it in mind when buying the machine - you should make sure the machine you purchase will be able to adapt and grow with you.

With so many fantastic features available on sewing machines today, it is important to remember not to sacrifice quality for features you are unlikely to need. Cheaper machines that claim to 'have it all' and hundreds of stitches as well may seem to good to be true. Often this is the case and you get what you pay for, so, yes, lots of stitches are great, but they won't be much good if the machine quality is questionable. Use simplicity and flexibility as your guides. Look for the features discussed above, such as a needle that can be moved left and right, and the up/down function. They will help you the most to reach your goal of a well-executed project. Other must-have features include adjustable stitch width and length, and an automatic needle threader to make set-up easier than ever.

Which Brands
Brands such as Bernina, Pfaff and Janome to name but a few have a reputation for quality and reliability, but do your research first and if possible try out machines locally. Lastly, make sure you buy your machine from someone you can trust. It's easy to walk into a superstore and select a machine to buy. But what happens when something goes wrong? Can you easily return the machine and how are you going to deal with repairs. Look for a place that offers you advice on how to use your machine, project ideas and perhaps classes or tips.

In Conclusion
Do your homework. Decide what you want to do with your machine and decide on a price range. Do your research, visit forums online, check out what other people have to say and always keep in mind what features you must have in a machine.

Why Did I Break My Needle?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Why Did My Sewing Machine Needle Break?

From time to time we all make mistakes in sewing. Yes even experienced sewers can make these same mistakes. So whether you are just learning to sew, or have been sewing for years take the extra time needed before starting a new project to be sure you don't damage your machine or injure yourself with a broken needle. It can be frustrating and costly to continually break needles during your sewing.

Breaking needles is not only costly, but is definitely something you want to avoid. When a needle breaks it can fall into the bottom portion of the machine, get lodged in the bobbin case or some place else you can't see. If you have trouble threading a needle, just imagine how hard it would be to find that tiny tip that broke off? When the tips fall into your machine it could damage your sewing machine and this can lead to costly repair bills. If that is your only sewing machine, that means waiting weeks to get it back! Another danger with broken needles is the tips of the needles can fly out towards your face, and the last thing you want is a sewing machine needle flying towards your face!

Here are the most common reasons for breaking needles. A few extra steps to double check your setup before you start sewing can save you time, pain and avoid costly repair bills!

  • Your needle was of poor quality. Use good quality, polished steel needles

  • You are pulling the fabric through the machine. When you pull the fabric through the machine it puts stress on the need and bends it out of place.

  • The needle is installed incorrectly. Check your manual to be sure it is inserted properly.

  • The needle may be to delicate for the fabric your working with. Use heavy-gauge needles for sewing heavier fabric like denim or leather.

  • You may have hit a pin. If possible, don't sew over pins. Pin so that they don't pass through the presser foot or remove them as you approach the presser foot, and before they actually go under the presser foot.

  • The presser foot is loose. This will cause the needle to hit the foot and bend. There should be a screw with which you can tighten the foot.

  • The needle plate is loose. Make sure it is secured tightly and in the correct place for the needle to pass through.

  • You have a single-hole-plate on the machine, and are using a decorative stitch like zigzag or some other stitch that is wider, and you are hitting the plate. Change to a plate that is meant for wider stitches and therefore has a wider hole.

Determining Antique Singer Sewing Machine Value

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For many, the antique Singer sewing machine value is mostly, or partially, sentimental. Typically, the machine they own belonged to a family member and was passed down through the generations as an heirloom piece. This does not, however, mean that antique Singer machine value lies purely in the sentimental, or in the family tree. Many collectors seek out antique Singer sewing machines for their rarity, for their beauty and for the sheer craftsmanship that went into their creation.

Singer started to manufacture sewing machines back in 1851, later on in 1856, they offered the first home-use model, which was cost prohibitive to most consumers at the time. Most people who purchased a Singer model in the 1850s did so on a payment plan, much the same as a credit card today.

These earlier models were stand mounted and featured one pedal while later models featured lock-stitch shuttles (patented by Singer in 1859) and two pedals. The machine that started a home-sewn revolution was so popular, it even had its own "action figures"-toy and miniature sewing machines made of cast iron.

Over the next several decades, Singer focused on creating more affordable models for home-use through mass production, leaving the original beauties behind. In the early 1900s, cabinet enclosures and even flip-top sewing machine tables were made, followed by various changes that lead to today's plastic models.

The original models from the mid to late 1800s may be valued in the high thousands depending on their condition, model, original extras, the casing and of course, the market as well as the pool of potential buyers. While condition is certainly a factor, antique Singer sewing machine value is based more on the year of production and the type of machine.

Factors that may be considered in determining the value of your antique Singer sewing machine include decoration on the machine and whether it is older, with a one pedal treadle or two pedal treadles. In addition, if the machine is in working condition with all of the original parts, the value will rise substantially. To get information about your pre-1900 Singer sewing machine, you can contact the Singer manufacturer at 1-800-4-SINGER for a verbal appraisal and have your model type, serial number and wits ready.

Antique and vintage Singer sewing machines are still in demand by many buyers because they are aware of the quality of manufacturing process. So regardless whether you're looking for antique or modern Singer sewing machines, you'll definitely make the right choice.

Sewing Tutorial: Retro Chic DIY Circle Skirt!

Impress your friends with a DIY circle skirt! It's the ideal project for beginners because it's super easy, but is very tailored looking and wearable. You will need: -Fabric. And then I buy an equal length to the width (so that I end up with a square). -matching thread -a zipper -interfacing (optional: If your fabric is stiff you probably could do without, but I find that in the long run interfacing gives me a much cleaner, more professional look) ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I just accidentally deleted the long detailed description and instructions I was typing. I'm going to bed.

Sewing Machine Models From Elna

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Elna introduced many models in sewing machines. Each model was unique with special feature of its own. I would like to share my knowledge on a few of these models from Elna sewing machines. Elna sewing machines vary from mechanical type of machines to electronic type of machines and to very highly computerized models.

The first introduced portable model was Elna 1, in the year 1940's. This model was an electronic one and the cover could be turned into a table for the sewing machine. This model created a revolution in the way sewing machines were designed. A model called Supermatic was introduced in the 1950's which had the feature of completely automatic stitching possible by the machine. The next famous model was called as Lotus which was introduced in the 1960's. Lotus had the design with reduced weight and it was easy to handle. The sewing machine accessories box was provisioned over the top of the sewing machine in the model Lotus.

In the year 1970's Elna Stella was introduced. This model had all the preferred features from the previous models as well as electronic way of sewing was introduced in Elna Stella. In the year of 1980's, Carina another new model was introduced by Elna sewing machines. This model made over lock stitches possible on all kind of fabrics for sewing. In the same decade, Elna 5000 a computerized way of sewing was introduced. This model had computer memory for sewing. In the following years, ElnaLock a model with portable thread system was introduced with dual needle capability in the machine. In the year of 1990's, Elna Diva was introduced. This model can do more embroideries and alphabets in the fabrics. In the year of 2000's, Elna Xquisit was introduced which was a fully automated computerized sewing machine. This model could do embroidery and automatic spooling to the needle in the machine.

Elna sewing machines adapted continuous improvement in the process of sewing machine design. The models they introduced are all with new and unique features with modern technologies incorporated.

I remember in those days during my childhood, my mother was desperate to buy one of the models of Elna sewing machines for her tailoring needs. Guys, if you are planning to get home a sewing machine, with my family's personal experience with Elna, I would suggest you to check with Elna sewing machines before you think of anything else. These machines made each one of us feel stitching and sewing more fun. To know more about sewing and Elna sewing machines please visit http://finestguideto.com/elna-sewing-machines/

Great Price AS YOU WISH for

Make It Sew Sewing Machine Review

The Make It Sew sewing machine is a miniature sized 2 speed with top and bottom thread stitching, uses bobbins. It can run on 4 AA batteries or electric, and has a hand on/off switch or foot pedal option. The foot pedal creates more variable speed control for turning, corners, or designs. It does a basic single stitch only. I bought this machine at a thrift store in its original box and with all the accessories included, as shown in the picture. I was able to get the machine running in a very short time and make some basic practice stitching with it, but the problem I believe is with the instruction manual which is written in poorly translated chinese and was not too helpful. I had a vintage book here called Readers Digest Complete Guide To Sewing which had the information in it to help me get the machine working, thankfully. So I will be using this small machine to learn on since I have minimal experience with actual sewing machines. I feel that it is a nice item and will enjoy using it. Thank you for reading my review :)

Make It Sew Sewing Machine Feature

  • This machine features two speeds
  • Ideal for approaching corners on small items, allows greater control when stitching through layers
  • Operates on 4-AA batteries that are not included
  • Also included is an AC adapter, foot petal, needle, and bobbin
  • Make It Sew comes with a cute storage case

Make It Sew Sewing Machine Overview

Create beautiful crafts, home decorating items, and even scrapbook pages with this mini sewing machine. This machine features two speeds. The high speed is comparable to the speed of other mini machines, and the low speed is slower, which is ideal for approaching corners on small items and allows greater control when stitching through several layers. Make It Sew operates on 4-AA batteries (not included). Also included is an AC adapter, foot petal, needle, and bobbin. This machine uses conventional needles and Singer 15 bobbins. Make It Sew comes with a cute storage case; durable clear corrugated plastic with bright yellow front clasp and carrying handle.

Sewing Projects For Beginners - 5 Easy Sewing Projects

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you intimidated by the very thought of sitting at a sewing machine and sewing? You're not alone. Whether it's concern over making a mistake while sewing, or being unfamiliar with how sewing machines work: you can learn to sew!

I have ideas for five (5) sewing projects for beginners that will help you become familiar with some basic skills needed in sewing, and will also allow you to easily produce your first sewing projects... items you can actually use!

1. Cloth Napkins: everyone is going 'green' these days, and using cloth napkins eliminates paper waste in landfills. Cotton fabric or a cotton blend works best for napkins.

2. Quilted Placemat: another 'green' project is reversible quilted placemats. Making quilted reversible cloth placemats is an eco-friendly way to bring customized decor to your dinner table. Whether a cotton or cotton blend, there is a near endless variety of fabric patterns and colors to choose from to match any decor.

3. Apron: sticking with the food/kitchen theme, sewing aprons is an easy project that can be used for more than just cooking. Aprons with pockets are great when you're sewing, to hold tape measurers and other tools used while sewing - or can be worn while cleaning to protect your clothing. Aprons can also be made more like smocks and used during painting or other messy craft projects.

4. T-shirt Dress: a quick and easy dress using a purchased t-shirt and material to make the skirt. Great for girls of all ages. As t-shirts come in a huge variety of colors, best to start with the skirt fabric and select a coordinating t-shirt color. Your skirt can be very full and gathered, or can be more A-line and straight. So this simple project is good for any body type and the skirt can be made whatever length you desire.

5. Long Jean Skirt: convert a pair of blue jeans easily into a long jean skirt with minimal sewing and no fitting! Cut open the leg of the jeans at the inner leg seam, and sewing in another piece of fabric (or use legs from another pair of jeans as the fill fabric - great way to recycle those too-tight jeans;) to fill in the space and make it a skirt.

The key to learning to sew is to ease into projects, grasping and learning the basic sewing skills as you gradually increase the complexity in what you choose to sew.

You can learn to sew! Check out Sewing Projects for Beginners for your next project idea.

Discover the Joy of Sewing by Accident

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The saddest day in my life was the day we took Nans to the nursing home.

It was a week later when the family gathered at 514 Church street where my grandmother lived for 45 years. Our mission, remove furniture, repair and paint walls so we can rent or sell the house.

We were informed by uncle Bill that if we wanted anything take it. But, aunts and uncles had first right if approval. It was important to me to find something to remember Nana by. I waited my turn with tears in my eyes and finally picked up several small items.

Two days later, for a reason I did not understand, my father came by my home with an old sewing machine. One I had seen, but shown no interest in, at Nana's home. I opened the drawers of the oak cabinet and discovered that I was the proud owner of a 1910 Singer sewing machine. I know this because I found the original manual.

I had absolutely no interest in sewing I saw no need to make something I could buy at the Mall. Besides, why go to the trouble of making a dress that would be out of style next season.

It took two months to find a job for my new Singer. It was a simple hemming job that took me two hours to complete. What an enjoyable experience it was.

and the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. I was hooked.

My first project was the little black dress, a 1920s design by Coco Chanel.

It is still in style to this day. My next several projects were variations of the little black dress in other colors, some with matching jacket.

My love for sewing started three years ago. I have since purchased a modern sewing machine. I stayed with Singer because my first served me well. My new machine came with many great features, some of which I still have not used, but I will.

I sometimes use the 1910 Singer, but I consider it an antique, an oak and iron work of art.It still functions as it did when it was new 100 years ago.

I have become that girl who is a good cook and makes her own clothes. Nana would be proud.

Sewing Machines That Are Best For You!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Clothes play a big part in showing who we are in the community, as unique individuals. We wear and buy clothes according to their style, price and most especially their durability. Like the old cliché, "We are what we wear!" Often times smart consumers look after clothes worth purchasing for, but nevertheless sometimes it is inevitable to be attracted to the latest fashion which makes us become an impulsive buyer. Encouraging the public to buy simply because it is the current fad, leaves the durability of the product out of their consideration. Thus, when these clothes are worn out, repair is essential especially to those who are in a tight budget.

Sewing is basically done for both functional and decorative reasons, such as mending ripped clothing or linens as well as doing embroidery. But as we all know sewing manually is not that easy. Normally people do not know how to do it properly. It is more complicated if it has a difficult pattern. These are the common problems we usually encounter when it comes to sewing.

In the sewing industry Brother Sewing Machines are of great prominence. Making their sewing machines noted as proficient and price efficient. Giving the consumers a wide range of models to choose from, they offer the best quality machines at a reasonable price. These machines are very functional. No more manual sewing. Being stylish is not that hard, you can express your own style by making several one-of-a-kind pieces. Although you can buy expensive clothes, you can also try to upgrade yourself and dare to be different. Open your storage room, filled with old clothes and begin experimenting on their styles with the help of your sewing machine. Design them and look for ways on how to make them glamorous and usable.

Repairing is wiser and convenient for us to do instead of buying new clothes every now and then. And if saving is one of your priorities at these times, then it is wise to buy something that really works and would last the test of time. Being stylish does not really have to wear expensive clothes. Sometimes it depends on how the person carries what he is wearing. Regardless of how simple the design is, if the person has enough self confidence on what he wears, he can easily get away with it. Stick to what is necessary and versatile, classic yet fashionable! Always remember the very famous line of most fashion gurus, less is more. So make sure to heed their advice if you do not want to look like ridiculous.

How To Use a Die Cut Machine

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Die cut machines can lead to many great projects, and the best thing is, they're really easy to use. Recently my maid of honor used her die cut machine to make adorable bird-themed cards for my bridal shower (thank you again, Kristin!) It took her a while to assemble them (sorry again), but everyone who RSVP'd loved them!

Even if you're not an avid card maker, there's plenty of fun to be had with die cut machines. Embellish a lampshade for your bedroom, fashion a fabric flower headband or make a hang-up decoration to add some life to the living room.

There are nearly endless possibilities, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

Scrapbooking
When I think of these machines, scrapbooking is one of the first things that comes to my mind. If you've ever put together a scrapbook, you know how much time and effort it takes to create just one page. When I made my first scrapbook for my boyfriend, I cut out every piece by hand. Had I owned a die cut machine, I'm sure I would have saved a few days worth of time - and my pieces wouldn't have been so crooked. Such machines have tons of different shapes and letter cut outs. To start your scrapbook page, all you have to do is decide the theme of the page and find the font and shapes from the die cut machine that you want to use. Paper and color choice is up to you, but the perfectly cut shapes and letters make every page look professional and clean - even if you're a beginner.

Cardmaking
For any holiday, party or event, there's a shape that will help you build a professional looking card. Really all you need to make a basic card is a die cut machine, card stock and some glue. For a more festive card, glue buttons or ribbon bows on top of the die cuts. Feeling fancy? Throw in some glitter, too! Making your own cards really lets you have complete creative control.

Home Decor/Center Pieces
These machines are also great for making lasting works of art for your home. Have pieces of die cuts left over from another project? Take your favorites and arrange them in a frame that matches your house. This project framed seven owl cuts in different colors to create a cute wall hanging. In addition to wall hangings, you can also create great centerpieces using die cuts. Make ten or more fabric flowers using die cuts and place them in your favorite vase. With no need for water or worrying about wilting, fabric flowers make a beautiful decoration that will last as long as you want!

Embellish Everything!
Since many machines are strong enough to cut tougher materials like fabric and leather, you can use their shapes to spruce up almost anything. Just finished sewing a beautiful blouse, but feel like something's missing? Take some flower die cuts and sew them together to create a ruffle effect. Layer different colored dies and sew them onto a plain apron to give it more pizazz. From a wedding dress to a lamp shade, it's easy to give every day items a little more spunk!

Before you go out and buy your machine, remember that they're not all the same. Do some research before you make your purchase to determine which machine and accessories are best for you. Happy crafting!

Small Sewing Machine

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Advantages Of A Small Sewing Machine

If sewing is your profession, you may want to buy a sewing machine but if you enjoy sewing and intend to use one in the household chores that arise from time to time, a small sewing machine should be the choice of the day. Even as the saying goes, " good things come in small packages" the best ones, with the most efficiency, come in compact sizes.

Even a lack of space in your home shouldn't be able to stop you from buying a small sewing machine; you can tuck them virtually anywhere, especially the hand held ones. In fact these little powerhouses come in two settings, cordless and otherwise, so you can think of them as your electric shaver, carry able virtually anywhere and ready to use in a flash.

Since your machine is a tiny and compact model, you wouldn't have to worry about the power outlet being near, in case your model is not cordless, theyare so light weight as a rule, that if the well don't walk to the sheep, the sheep most certainly can.

Despite it being a miniature size, you will find your small sewing machine to be more than a match for your requirements. Short of some really heavy duty sewing, for which your machine is definitely not made for, you will find your small machines more than adequate.

Another most attractive fact about these products is the great price tag they come with, you will find buying one easily manageable for your budget. A small sewing machine usually costs a fraction of the price you would normally have to pay if you wanted to buy a regular size.

These little wonders are very task specific and it would not be a very great idea to introduce these to a child learning to sew, a machine specifically built for kids would rather be recommended in that case.

Pop-ularize Your Products With Pop Up Canopies

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you are planning on organizing a trade show or an outdoor event, use pop up canopies to protect your products from the elements and storage. These easy-to-assemble and dissemble canopies will make the process less hectic for your personnel.

Pop Up Canopies: Features
Typically, pop up canopies are available in varied sizes ranging from 5'x5'-10'x20'. These canopies have two components, the frame and the top. The frame may be constructed of metal, steel or aluminum. Steel frames are heavier, but are less expensive than aluminum frames. Also, steel frames last longer since they do not rust easily. Aluminum frames are convenient to be carried around because they are generally lightweight metal.

Most canopy tops are made of Oxford polyester, a fabric rated in denier units. While buying, ensure that the denier rating of the fabric is 500 because a rating above this number will increase weight without adding any value to the material.

A straight-leg canopy is generally preferred to a slant-leg one because the former offers a square footage from the leg base to the top. A 10x10 straight-leg canopy would provide 100 square feet of shade. A 10x10 slant-leg canopy would offer only 80 square feet of shade which is approximately 20% less square footage, as compared to straight-leg canopy.

Pop Up Canopies: Additional Advantages
Pop up canopies are versatile; meaning that they can be used with, or without walls. At a trade fair, a canopy without walls would indicate that you wish that potential customers to freely walk into the tent. A canopy with walls proves useful in detrimental weather conditions.

These canopies can be customized to display logo graphics and colors of your choice. Some commercial companies manufacture canopies using silk screening to print messages or designs on canopy tops and walls. This will help to increase you brand visibility at any event. Not only at corporate events, these canopies are preferred for bonfire parties and beachside weddings due to their fire-retardant and water-resistant properties.

Generally, the material of a canopy is durable and possesses an inherent rip-stop quality which ensures that a slight tear will not cause a bigger rent in the tent. A UV ray blocking material proves especially useful during sporting events or the farmer's market in the summer months.

Buy these canopies from http://www.canopymart.com and avail the benefit of selecting from the best brands at most reasonable prices.

At CanopyMart.com, we offer the highest quality pop up canopies including Caravan Canopies, KD Canopies, canopy accessories & more at the lowest wholesale price to the public.

The Basics of Singer Sewing Machines

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If someone asked you to name a brand of sewing machine, chances are you'd answer Singer. They're probably the best-known sewing machine brand in the entire industry. Singer sewing machines have been manufactured since 1851 using the highest quality standards. The zigzag stitch feature, now almost universally offered on sewing machines, was an innovation by Singer. They also developed and marketed the first electronic sewing machine.

It doesn't matter if you're interested in quilting, embroidery, home décor sewing or making your own clothes, there's a Singer sewing machine that can do the job. They're some of the most advanced machines in the world. It's no wonder Singer has been a household name for over 150 years.

Singer breaks their sewing machine range up into four main categories. For beginners, they have a basic machine. It's easy to use and economical, but it can also do more advanced jobs like buttonholes and utility stitching. Secondly, they have the Scholastic series. These are specifically designed for use in a teaching environment. For this reason they are practical and extremely durable.

The third group of machines belongs in the Quantum series. These are Singer's top quality machines. They incorporate a range of modern conveniences, including electronic mechanisms. The final category is the multi-featured series, which includes Singer's multi-featured machines. It's easy to see that Singer has a sewing machine to suit everyone's needs.

Purchasing a sewing machine is easy, as there are many places for you to look. Check out your local department store, the Internet and in catalogs. Most larger towns and cities have a sewing store, or at least a large craft store. Because Singers are known to be high quality and durable, you don't need to worry about what you're buying if you choose a used Singer sewing machine either.

It can be interesting to ask around and find out if one of the older members of your family still has an antique Singer. Recently these old sewing machines have become collector's items. There are even enthusiasts who collect antique Singer sewing machines as a full time hobby. If you find the serial number on the machine, you can call Singer and they will be able to identify the date the machine was manufactured. You can also look online, as there are websites that can help trace the serial number to an approximate manufacture date.

If you're interested in selling an antique Singer, then you can get in touch with people that specialize in appraising antique Singers. Whether you want to use it yourself or collect them as a hobby, Singer machines truly represent durability and quality.

Applique Video Tutorial - so colorful, so easy for Machine Embroidery

Applique is when you sew or embroider a smaller piece of fabric on to a larger one. This is mainly for decorative reasons. However, how suitable to use applique when your favorite garment is damaged and you need to hide the tear or hole. Applique is very popular as you can also use up all those off-cut pieces of fabric that are simply too small for another project. www.astitchahalf.com

Vintage Sewing Machines

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Vintage sewing machines are very popular with crafty people and collectors. This is because the machines tend to be beautiful, but also because they were made so well that they still work fantastically. It is also because a vintage sewing machine is a beautiful addition to a room's decor. Sewing machines first begun being mass produced in the 1850's.

The first sewing machines were not electric! There wasn't widespread electricity until the very late 1890's-early 1900's. The machines were run by either foot pedals, or a hand cranked wheel. They were both the same concept as machines use today. The foot pedals would turn the wheel which made the needle go up and down. The hand crank worked the same way. Although more difficult to use, because one hand was always preoccupied, the hand crank was preferred by many people because it was smaller.

These machines frequently came with a cabinet or case. It would have drawers to store notions and the manual in. They also would serve as a table. This provided a place to keep the sewing machine as well as an attractive decorative piece.

Many of these machines are beautifully decorated. They are painted or have metalwork on them in shapes of flowers or victorian motifs. The cabinets were made of hardwoods, many of which were carved with similar patterns to the machines.

Although many of these machines are still highly available, due to mass production and long life, many are not worth quite as much as you would think. But this makes it easier for the hobby collector to purchase them! There are several models which sell for greater amounts, this is almost always because of scarcity.
